London equips Taliban with medium-model weapons- source
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, March 10, IRNA -- An informed source said Thursday that the government of Britain has sent medium-model weapons to Taliban in Afghanistan after several rounds of secret talks with the military group.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source told IRNA that the move was an indication of London's meddling in Afghanistan's internal affairs.
'There are documents showing that Taliban have directly received the weapons from British forces in Afghanistan,' said the source adding that the delivery had taken place through a military base in Bagram region some 60 km norht of the capital city of Kabul.
After sending the weapons to Taliban, West has paved the way for bilateral talks between the group and the government of President Hamid Karzai.
'When Taliban occupied Musa Qala town in southern Afghanistan, former British prime minister Gordon Brown arrived unexpectedly in the country. That was when a major cargo of the British made weapons had been delivered to Taliban leaders,' the source added.
Papers about secret talks held in Musa Qala between the Taliban leaders and the British forces were disclosed about three years ago after declassification of a number of secret information of the British government dated back to 1980.
In the past year, London and Washington have seriously changed their strategies in Afghanistan expressing clear support for what they called a 'moderating Taliban.'
Iranian authorities had officially warned against London's support for Taliban in 2007.
Even the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had said last year that Washington admitted its role in Talibans' formation against attacks of the former Soviet Union forces on Afghanistan in late 1970s.
