US presence in Afghanistan causes more violence

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, March 6, IRNA -- Presence of the US forces in Afghanistan has led to more violence and major boost in the amount of illicit drugs being produced in that country, Foreign Ministry spokesman said Sunday.

Ramin Mehmanparast made the remarks commenting on the latest statement made by Commander of the US and NATO forces in Afghanistan General Stanley McChrystal.

The US commander had accused Iran of equipping rebel forces in Afghanistan.

“Observers of Afghanistan’s affairs have unanimously agreed that the US presence in Afghanistan had two major and costly consequences including the return of violence and revival of the extremist forces in that country as well as decupled production of illegal drugs in Afghanistan,” Mehmanparast said.

Stressing that Tehran was one of the pioneers of the fight against terrorism and anti-drugs campaign, the spokesman said, “Tehran is closely watching any moves and relations of the US forces with the terrorist groups in Afghanistan.”

Mehmanparst stressed that most of Afghanistan’s illicit drugs were reportedly transited from airports in the cities of Kandahar and Bagram which are under the control of the US forces.
