Egyptian Premier Addresses Mass Rally In Tahrir Square

March 04, 2011

Egypt's newly appointed prime minister, Essam Sharaf, has addressed a mass rally in Cairo's Tahrir Square.

He told demonstrators he would do all he could to "realize their demands." He said he had come to the square "to draw legitimacy" from the crowds.

Sharaf was appointed March 2 by Egypt's military rulers after his predecessor, Ahmed Shafiq, was forced out because he was seen as too close to former president Hosni Mubarak.

Tahrir Square was the epicenter of the anti-Mubarak uprising in February and protests there have carried on after his ouster. Demonstrators continue to press for demands such as the release of political prisoners and the lifting of a state of emergency.
