EU leaders to convene emergency Libya summit on March 11
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Berlin, March 1, IRNA -- The European Union is to host an emergency summit on the situation in Libya and North Africa on March 11, German press said.
The decision followed a meeting between EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy and the EU's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton who discussed the bloc's reaction to the mass uprisings across North Africa.
Ashton has reportedly been assigned to prepare the summit.
Although the EU has already imposed tough sanctions on the regime of Colonel Moammar Qaddafi, there have been calls from several leaders of the bloc to hold a special summit to discuss what other steps could be taken.
Backed by Spain and Italy, France had earlier called for convening emergency EU summit on the developments in Libya.
The EU leaders are expected to hold their talks during an informal lunch in Brussels.
