Germany freezes bank account of Qaddafi's son

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, March 1, IRNA -- The German government has blocked a bank account that belongs to a son of Libyan dictator Moammar Qaddafi, containing two million euros, Economy Minister Rainer Bruederle announced on Tuesday.

He did not actually name the German bank where the money is deposited.

'With this directive, we have taken an unmistakable stand,' Bruederle said.

The account was frozen following an agreement reached by the Economy Ministry, the Foreign Ministry, the Finance Ministry and the German Central Bank, Bruederle said.

'German is working hand-in-hand with the European Union and stands on the side of all those who demand democracy and the rule of law,' he added.

The decision comes only a day after the European Union slapped sanctions on Libya, including an arms embargo and imposing a visa ban and asset freeze on Qaddafi's family and key members of his regime.

Germany had spearheaded calls for strong international sanctions against the Qaddafi regime.
