Egypt Bans Mubarak, Family From Traveling Abroad

February 28, 2011

Egypt has banned ousted President Hosni Mubarak and his family from traveling abroad and also ordered a freeze on their assets.

A spokesman for Egypt's prosecutor general said Mubarak and his family have been banned from leaving the country while complaints about their accumulation of wealth are being investigated.

He did not specify who filed the complaints, but said the prosecutor general has issued an official order.

Mubarak stepped down on February 11 in the wake of a revolt in nearby Tunisia and following weeks of protests against Mubarak's rule.

Mubarak and his wife, two sons, and their wives are believed to have made billions of dollars for themselves during his 30-year rule.

Mubarak is now believed to be living in seclusion with his family in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, on the Sinai Peninsula.
