TEL AVIV, February 20 (RIA Novosti) - The Israeli prime minister said on Sunday Israel "views with utmost gravity" the plans by Iran to send warships to the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal.

"I think that today, we can see what an unstable region we live in, a region in which Iran tries to exploit the situation that has been created in order to expand its influence by passing warships through the Suez Canal," the Jerusalem Post quoted Benjamin Netanyahu as saying.

Egypt's new authorities have approved a request by Iran to allow two Iranian warships en route to Syria to cross the Suez Canal on Monday.

Earlier on Sunday, Al Alam reported that the vessels had started their passage through the Suez Canal. Egypt has not officially confirmed the report.

Netanyahu told a cabinet meeting that the "security component is critical to any peace agreement."
