At least four dead as police attempt to suppress riots in Bahrain

RIA Novosti

13:17 17/02/2011 MOSCOW, February 17 (RIA Novosti) - At least four people have died and nearly 100 have been injured in Bahrain's capital of Manama as riot police attempt to suppress demonstrators inspired by recent coups in Egypt and Tunisia, according to media reports.

Thousands of mainly Shiite protesters have been camped out on Manama's central square for three days demanding more political representation in a country ruled by a Sunni Muslim monarchy.

Reports said earlier in the day police arrived on Pearl Square during the night while many of the protesters were asleep and began using rubber bullets and teargas to break up the camp.

Mattar's Shiite opposition Wefaq party, which has walked out of parliament, on Wednesday demanded a new constitution that would steer the country towards democracy.
