German chancellor hails Mubarak resignation labeling it 'historic'

Berlin, Feb 11, IRNA -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed here Friday the resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, branding it 'historic.'
'We are all witnesses to an historic moment of change,' she told media representatives at the chancellery in Berlin.
Merkel voiced hope that Egyptians would end up with a society 'free of corruption, of censorship, of detentions and torture.'
She stressed the changes had to be made irreversible and be accomplished in peace.
'They must culminate in free elections,' said Merkel who had refused to openly support the pro-democracy movement during the 18-day uprising.
Germany was a strong supporter of the western-backed Mubarak regime which was an ardent backer of the Zionist regime.
