2/4/2011 - SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Three C-17s airdropped a total of 120 bundles of fuel, the largest resupply of fuel ever to a remote military outpost, in Waza K'Wah, Afghanistan Jan. 29 through 30.
Waza K'wah has not had a convoy ground resupply in nearly three years due to poor to non-existent roadway infrastructure and the high risk of enemy activity. The forward operating base runs off of the fuel supplied in these airdrops, and without them wouldn't be able to conduct missions.
In total, the airdrop delivered approximately 20 thousand gallons of fuel, all contained in 55-gallon barrels. That's enough fuel to fill an average passenger vehicle more than 1,400 times.
Waza K'wah, along with a handful of other FOBs and checkpoints, is a dedicated air drop only location.
"We couldn't sustain Task Force Currahee's outposts without the Air Force," said Lt. Col. Davis Preston, 801st Brigade Support Battalion Commander, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.
Also, throughout Afghanistan this week, USAFCENT aircraft conducted 506 close air support sorties in direct support of Coalition ground commanders. For those involving weapons releases, targets included enemy personnel conducting attacks on Afghan and Coalition forces, enemy fighting positions, snipers, IED emplacers, enemy compounds, and a weapons cache building.
Additionally, in continued support of the U.S. military mission in Iraq, to advise and assist Iraq's security forces and conduct partnered counter-terrorism operations, USAFCENT aircraft flew 60 close air support sorties, none of which involved weapons releases.
