Karzai calls for reconciliation with moderate Taliban elements

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Feb 6, IRNA -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday called for greater efforts to accelerate the reconciliation process with moderate Taliban elements.

Addressing the 47th Munich Security Conference, Karzai said, 'Taliban are part of Afghan society. Those who accept the Afghan constitution, those who are not part of al-Qaeda and those who are not part of terrorist networks are the sons of our soil and we would like to reconcile as soon as possible by all possible means.'

The Afghan leader has repeatedly pressed for reconciliation talks with moderate Taliban elements to help reinforce peace and security in Afghanistan.

Karzai reiterated that force alone would 'not bring peace' to Afghanistan.

He called for a 'cooperative security arrangement' between Afghanistan and its neighbors geared at pacifying his country.
