CORONADO, Calif. (NNS) -- The "Wildcards" of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 23 are scheduled to participate in Centennial of Naval Aviation events, scheduled for Feb. 12 at Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island.
"HSC-23 has been tasked with providing plane guard duties from home to cover the USS Peleliu (LHA 5) while they're underway, and will be helping out with some Centennial of Naval Aviation activities,"said Lt. Matt Clark, HSC-23 assistant operations officer. "We are also sending an armed helicopter kit over to HSC-31 for display during the festivities."
The Centennial of Naval Aviation, commemorating 100 years of progress and achievement in naval aviation, is a year-long tribute to the scope of all naval aviation activities, including aircraft, people, ships, innovations and significant milestones.
"It's something that happens once every 100 years, so everyone's all smiles around here and they're working really hard to prepare for the centennial," said Clark.
The celebration kicks off at NAS North Island with four days of festivities, Feb. 10-13. The event will include carrier and ship tours, static display aircraft, a classic car show and a parade of flight featuring more than 75 aircraft.
"It's kind of awe inspiring. The Navy's been doing this for 100 years and we get to be a part of the celebration as it happens at North Island," said Clark.
HSC-23 is comprised of six expeditionary detachments that deploy aboard amphibious assault ships and fast-combat support ships. HSC-23's primary missions include search and rescue, logistical support, Naval Special Warfare and Vertical Replenishment at sea. The command also supports a variety of other essential services, including Navy Air Ambulance Detachment, medical evacuations and special operations support.
