Berlin says unaware of deployment of German arms in Egypt crackdown

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Feb 4, IRNA -- The German government alleged on Friday it had no information about the use of German-made weapons in suppressing the anti-Mubarak protests in Egypt.

Talking to the press in Berlin, a spokeswoman for the German Economic Ministry which is responsible for granting export permits for military hardware, said she had 'no knowledge' of German water-cannons being deployed in the crackdown of the pro-democracy protests.

Her comments followed earlier remarks by a senior lawmaker of the opposition The Left party, Jan van Aken who said there were images and videos showing the deployment of water-cannons produced by the German MAN company in the anti-Mubarak crackdown.

Meanwhile, an interior ministry spokesman denied press reports about the delivery of discarded German police water guns to Egypt. He did point out though that German automaker Daimler had sold water cannons to Egypt as early as 1970s.
