Afghan, Coalition Forces Kill, Detain Insurgents

WASHINGTON, Feb. 4, 2011 – Afghan and coalition forces killed two enemy fighters and detained several suspected insurgents yesterday in operations throughout Afghanistan, military officials reported.
-- A coalition patrol in Nimroz province’s Knash Rod district observed three insurgents planting roadside bombs. Troops engaged the men with small-arms fire, killing two of them.
-- In Kandahar province’s Maiwand district, Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban bomb maker and several other suspected insurgents. Tips from local residents led security forces to the militants’ location, where they were detained without incident.
-- Separate insurgent bombings in Kandahar province left five Afghan civilians wounded. In the province’s Kandahar district, four civilians, including two children, were injured by a roadside bomb. Another bystander.
