Antigovernment Protesters Turn Out In Yemen

03.02.2011 12:00

Opponents of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh marched in the capital Sanaa today to in demonstrations designed to force the president from office.

Reports said about 20,000 protesters took to the streets. The march was peaceful and ended later in the afternoon without serious incident.

The president announced on February 2 that he would leave office when his term expires in 2013, after ruling the country for three decades. He also said he would not hand over power to his son as had been widely feared.

Opposition leaders welcomed that initiative but said the protests would go on.

Yemen faces a separatist movement in the south, a Shi'ite rebellion in the north, and a growing presence of Islamic militants.
