POLARIS POINT, Guam (NNS) -- The submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) earned its fifth consecutive Battle Efficiency, or Battle "E" award, Jan. 7.
The Battle "E" is awarded annually to ships with the "best in class" performance.
Cable is one of two submarine tenders that competed for the award. As well as tending submarines and surface ships, Cable also performs expeditionary manning for her sister ship and competitor, USS Emory S. Land (AS 39).
"I am most proud of the fact that the crew overcame many challenges during 2010, to successfully accomplish their mission," said Capt. Thomas Stanley, USS Frank Cable commanding officer.
Stanley said this year the tender underwent two consecutive shipyard maintenance periods, the integration of civilian mariners into the Deck, Engineering, and Supply departments, and managed an increasing submarine maintenance workload.
"The crew demonstrated excellence in the mission areas of submarine repair, weapons handling, and logistics support, as well as providing excellent medical and dental care for all Guam submarine and tender crewmembers," said Stanley.
Winning the Battle "E" and its awards for Repair, Weapons, Logistics, Medical and Dental, required high standards of excellence from all hands and departments.
"Since the Cable's primary mission is to repair submarines and surface ships, the contributions of the Repair department to the successful accomplishment of fleet maintenance, is a big part of the command's success," said Cmdr. Michael Dufek, USS Frank Cable repair officer.
According to Dufek, the Repair department conducted 400,000 man hours of production work and repaired four submarine propellers in half the time it would have taken a shipyard. Cable also performed the first ever tender maintenance of a Virginia-class submarine.
"I believe that this award is a testament to the hard work and professionalism of the entire crew," said Lt. Cmdr. Scott Brockman, USS Frank Cable weapons officer.
Weapons department trained 900 personnel in the use of various firearms, handled more than 130 torpedoes, and performed 475 weight tests for Cable and tended units.
"I think the entire Frank Cable crew worked very hard, accomplished a great deal, and deserves this recognition," said Stanley.
Cable conducts maintenance and support of submarines and surface vessels deployed in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility.
