Thales awarded Tactical Control Radar Contract

26 January 2011

(Ottawa – 25 January, 2011) – Thales Canada announced that it has been awarded the Tactical Control Radar contract by the Department of National Defence. Thales will supply and integrate two Ground Master 400 (GM 400) radars deployable with a suite of communications and operator control systems.

“We are pleased to deliver on The Government of Canada’s challenging requirements with our Ground Master radar that provides accurate detection against a vast array of modern-day threats while maintaining a high level of mobility,” said Paul Kahn, Thales Canada President and CEO. “This builds on our 40 year track record of providing world-class sensor systems to the Canadian Forces as highlighted by our recent award to Thales Canada for SMART-S radars for the Canadian Navy’s Halifax class frigates.”

The GM 400 is a 3-D long-range air defence radar, offering detection from very high to very low altitudes. It tracks a wide range of targets from highly manoeuvrable low-flying tactical aircraft to unconventional smaller targets such as UAVs, ensuring an excellent wide-area air picture.

Reinforcing Thales capabilities as a prime contractor and a premier system integrator in Canada, the radar will be integrated with an Identification Friend or Foe (IFF), command and control, Ground-Air-Ground and SatCom Communications, Link 16/11/1, networking and management systems, and simulation.

Since the product launch in 2008, GM 400 radars have been acquired by Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Malaysia and Slovenia. Thales Canada will be supported by ThalesRaytheonSystems, a transatlantic joint venture that specializes in air operation command and control systems, surveillance radars, and ground-based weapon-locating radars.
