Contracting centers renamed to reflect expanded customer base

Jan 19, 2011

By Army News Service

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Jan. 19, 2011) -- The Army Contracting Command has renamed its seven major contracting centers to reflect their geographic location.

The name changes recognize the growing customer base for the different contracting centers, said ACC spokesman Larry D. McCaskill.

"As times changed, we found so has their customer base," McCaskill said. "The centers serve a vast community now, and we thought it would be more in line to name them geographically."

In the past, the names of the contracting centers reflected their primary customer. The TACOM Contracting Center in Warren, Mich., for instance, served primarily the Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command.

McCaskill said that while the names for the contracting centers will change, they will continue to serve their primary customers while they also serve their expanding customer base.

The Army Contracting Command stood up in 2008 under the Army Materiel Command. At that time, the seven contracting centers were aligned directly under ACC authority.

Today, the Army's contracting centers provide comprehensive acquisition, contracting, business advisory, production support, and depot-level maintenance services in acquiring, fielding, and sustaining Army weapon systems, services and Soldier support.

The ACC and its contracting centers work with commercial firms to acquire equipment, supplies and services for America's Army. The ACC awards more than 210,000 contracts each year, valued at more than $92 billion world-wide.

The seven center name changes include:

-- National Capital Region Contracting Center becomes Army Contracting Command - National Capital Region, Alexandria, Va.

-- TACOM Contracting Center becomes Army Contracting Command - Warren, Warren Mich.

-- CECOM Contracting Center becomes Army Contracting Command - Aberdeen Proving Ground (C4ISR), APG, Md.

-- RDECOM Contracting Center becomes Army Contracting Command - APG (SCRT), Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.

-- JM&L Contracting Center becomes Army Contracting Command - Picatinny, Picatinny Arsenal, N.J.

-- AMCOM Contracting Center becomes Army Contracting Command - Redstone, Redstone Arsenal, Al.

-- Rock Island Contracting Center becomes Army Contracting Command - Rock Island, Rock Island, Ill.
