Roadside bomb blast kills 9 civilians in northeast Afghanistan
15:45 16/01/2011 MOSCOW, January 16 (RIA Novosti) - Nine civilians, including a child, were killed after a car hit a roadside bomb in northeastern Afghanistan, local authorities said on Sunday.
The incident occurred in the province of Baghlan on Sunday when the car was carrying nine people to a wedding ceremony, governor Abdul Majid told reporters.
On Saturday, a roadside bomb blast destroyed a minibus, killing six civilians in the southern province of Helmand.
Violence has surged in Afghanistan in recent months, with the Taliban group, which was toppled in a 2001 U.S.-led campaign, staging regular attacks on provincial government officials, police and civilians and planting roadside bombs to target Afghan, U.S. and NATO troops.
