Iran summons Afghan ambassador

RIA Novosti

Tehran, Jan 15, 2011, IRNA -- Afghan Ambassador to Tehran was summoned to Iran’s foreign ministry on Saturday to protest organizing demonstration outside Iranian embassy in Kabul and subsequent attack by the protesters on the embassy building.

According to the Information and Press Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the meeting, Director General for West Asia at the foreign ministry Ghanezadeh delivered a strongly-worded protest note to the Afghan ambassador over the attack.

Ghanezadeh warned that such behavior would harm friendly ties between the two countries.

He also called on the Afghan government to seriously deal with those behind the incident.

The Afghan ambassador, for his part, expressed regret over the issue and promised that his country would take necessary action to this effect.

Iranian Ambassador to Kabul Fada Hossein Maleki has called on the Afghan government to arrest the demonstrators who attacked Iranian Embassy.

The demonstrators attacked the Iranian Embassy in Kabul to protest what they called Iranian refusal to transit fuel to Afghanistan by stopping convoys of trucks on border areas.

Iran says the Afghan government has broken its promise of delivering the fuel for public heating rather than meet the needs of foreign troops.
