IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Jan 14, IRNA -- The Mideast Quartet - comprised of of the European Union, UN, US and Russia - are to meet in Munich on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, due to be held from February 4-6, a top German official told the press here on Friday.

The high-level meeting will include Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, his US counterpart Hillary Clinton, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, according to German government spokesman Steffen Seibert.

He voiced hope that the planned Mideast Quartet talks in Munich could provide 'an urgently needed impetus for the Mideast peace process,' while making clear that a political stalemate on the issue was 'not an option.'

Seibert stressed that the Munich meeting was only 'a small step on the long path' in the Middle East peace process.

Political observers in Berlin view the talks in Munich as last-ditch efforts to jump-start Mideast peace talks which have stalled for months over the highly controversial settlement policies of the Zionist regime.
