DIEGO GARCIA (NNS) -- USS Florida (SSGN 728) (Blue) held a change-of-command ceremony aboard Navy Support Facility (NSF) Diego Garcia, Jan. 3.

Capt. Gregory M. Ott relieved Capt. Randy B. Crites as commanding officer of the Ohio-class cruise missile submarine.

Crites took command of Florida in February 2009, after the ship returned from its maiden deployment. Under the command of Crites, the ship completed two forward deployments, which included three missions vital to national security.

Additionally, the ship conducted Special Operation Forces certifications and was part of a National Geographic television special which showcased the SSGN platform. Florida earned the 2010 Commander Submarine Squadron 16 Battle Efficiency Excellence award.

"It was the best job I've had," said Crites. "It was also the most satisfying of my career. To take a crew of 165 enlisted men and officers and a submarine that just completed a highly successful maiden deployment, and build upon that base working toward continued improvement in operational readiness and mission capability was an extremely rewarding experience."

Before relinquishing command, Crites spoke not only of thanks, but more of inspiration in his final speech as the commanding officer. He gave recognition to his previous mentors who imparted guidance, to his crew and to the families of his crew who "sacrifice daily for our country."

"USS Florida is a ship destined for continued success, she is on a good course, and I feel humbled and honored to have had a part in her accomplishments," said Crites.

Ott said he looks forward to the challenges of upholding the traditions set by the ship and continuing Florida's reputation of excellence.

Crites' next assignment will be as the head of Programming, Planning and Development OPNAV N801 in Arlington, Va.

USS Florida, the third of four SSGN platforms, is capable of conducting clandestine strike operations, joint special operation forces operations, battle space preparation and information operations, SSGN/SSN consort operations, carrier and expeditionary strike group operations, battle management and experimentation of future submarine payloads.
