US Navy Likely to Suspend Captain for Lewd Videos
Al Pessin 04 January 2011
The U.S. Navy says it will remove the captain of the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier from his command post pending an investigation into lewd videos he produced in 2006 and 2007.
Officials say the suspension of 49-year-old Captain Owen Honors could come as early as Tuesday.
Honors also stars in the videos, which are filled with anti-gay slurs and sexually explicit references.
The videos were shown on the ship's closed-circuit television system to the carrier's crew of 6,000 during deployment. At the time, Honors was the ship's executive officer, or second-in-command.
The videos were first made public Saturday by The Virginian-Pilot newspaper in Norfolk, Virginia, where the USS Enterprise is based.
A Navy spokesman, Commander Chris Sims, called the videos "inappropriate" and said the Navy does not endorse or condone such actions.
