UK plays down Zionist regime's arrest of embassy staff

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

London, Jan 4, IRNA -- The British government has played down the Zionist regime's arrest of two Palestinian employees from its consulate in east Bait Ul Muqaddas, insisting that it had no diplomatic implications.

The consulate acted as a de facto embassy to the Palestinian Authority but the Foreign Office said it had been told by Zionist authorities that the charges had 'no connection' with the men's jobs as maintenance workers at its offices in Sheikh Jarrah suburb.

The Palestinian employees reportedly have been charged with arms trafficking for Hamas as part of an investigation into an alleged plot to fire a rocket at a local football stadium.

Relations between the UK and Zionist regime have been strained by the delay in changing universal jurisdiction to prevent arrest warrants being issued against suspected Isreali war criminals when visiting Britain and differences over the Middle East peace process.

But according to the Guardian newspaper Tuesday, a Foreign Office spokesman in London insisted that there were no diplomatic implications to the latest episode.

The consulate has often been under pressure by the Zionist regime because it is based in east Bait Ul-Muqaddas, which Britain upholds as being occupied territory.

Unlike the US embassy to Occupied Palestine, which was controversially moved to Bait Ul-Muqaddas in the 1990s, the UK has so far insisted in maintaining its embassy in Tel Aviv.

A separate Israeli campaign has also targeted Muslim charities in Britain which offered humanitarian assistance to Palestinians besieged in Gaza, but allegations against Interpal and Muslim Aid have been cleared by investigations by the Charity Commission.
