VIRGINIA BEACH, Va (NNS) -- The Navy Exchange (NEX) aboard Naval Base San Diego held a grand opening ceremony for its food court, Dec. 16.
The opening of the food court completes the renovation and expansion project of NEX San Diego.
"While renovation of the food court was not included in the renovation project at the NEX, the existing food court was in need of a reallocation of food vendor spaces, upgrades to the seating area, improved lighting and new [brand-name] food operators to enhance the menu offerings for our customers," said Mark Lipovsik, Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) food service development specialist. "We decided to go ahead and renovate the food court as the final project at the NEX."
The NEX San Diego food court now features five new brand-names that did not exist in the old food court. The new eateries include Famous Famiglia, 5 Guys Burgers and Fries, Panda Express, IHOP Express and Rubios. In addition, Subway will continue to operate in the new food court.
"The name brand food service options will be unmatched to any major food court, whether in the NEXCOM Food program, or in the commercial sector," said Lipovsik. "I think our customers at NEX San Diego will enjoy their new food court."
In addition to the new eateries, customers will find upgrades to the flooring, seating area, rest rooms, the overhead lighting, ceiling and HVAC system.
"The new food court is a perfect complement to our NEX," said Capt. Rick L. Williamson, Naval Base San Diego commanding officer. "It provides numerous dining options at great values to our Sailors and their families, and exemplifies what the CNO meant by making the Navy a 'top fifty' work place. No one takes better care of our Sailors than the NEX staff at Naval Base San Diego."
Donald Wild, the NEX San Diego general manager, said he appreciates all the patience his customers have shown during the renovation process.
"The renovation and expansion of our store and food court has been a long road," said Wild. "Our customers have had to endure a lot of changes, movement of merchandise and the closure of the food court. This new food court is sensational. Now that everything is complete, I know they will agree that it was all worth the wait."
