President Obama calls Zardari over Afghan policy review

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Dec 17, IRNA -- President Obama called President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday night and apprised the Pakistan President of the salient features of the just concluded US policy review on Afghanistan, the President office said.

They also discussed the situation in the region, a statement from the President office said.

President Obama thanked President Asif Ali Zardari for his condolences and warm tributes over the death of Richard Holbrooke Special US Envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan, it said.

President Asif Ali Zardari thanked President Obama for apprising him of the substantive elements of the US policy review.

The two Presidents also agreed to have a face to face meeting soon, the statement said.

The US review of Afghan strategy says that Al-Qaeda's leadership in Pakistan is at its weakest since 2001.

President Barack Obama's review also says the US has made enough progress in Afghanistan to start a 'responsible reduction' of forces in July 2011.

But it says the gains made against the Taliban by a US troop surge remain 'fragile and reversible'.
