USS BARRY, At Sea (NNS) -- Engineering Sailors aboard USS Barry (DDG 52) worked below decks to keep the ship in top form while participating in a Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX) with Enterprise Carrier Strike Group, Dec. 3-12.

With two of Barry's four engines in need of repair during JTFEX, the loss of equipment would have prevented crew members from completing the final certification event before an upcoming deployment.

"If we were unable to fix those engines, the ship would have had limited redundancy available," said Gas Systems Turbine Technician (Mechanical) 2nd Class Lance Reynolds. "This could have severely inhibited the ships speed and maneuverability."

Although these repairs are not normally conducted by the crew, the engineers were able to get the engines back up and running in less than 30 hours.

"Back in Norfolk, the shore facilities we use to fix the engines sometimes take several days to finish," said Senior Chief Gas Systems Turbine Technician Robert Indelicato. "My engineers never cease to amaze me in their ability to tackle challenges with accuracy and efficiency. From the Sailor fixing the equipment, to those who stood extra watches, the engineers came together as a team."

Engineering department Sailors have been on an intense schedule since March 2010, completing numerous inspections in addition to material, maintenance, and management (3M) mid-cycle assessments.

"My engineers are some of the hardest working Sailors in the fleet," said Indelicato. "We get better everyday and are a force to be reckoned with on the waterfront. I'm confident in their performance and skills."

Enterprise Carrier Strike Group consists of USS Enterprise (CVN 65), the guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55), the guided-missile destroyers USS Bulkeley (DDG 84), USS Mason (DDG 87), and USS Barry, along with USNS Arctic (T-AOE 8), Carrier Air Wing 1 and Destroyer Squadron 2.
