Former Kyrgyz President's Nephew Appeals Verdict
December 14, 2010
BISHKEK -- Kyrgyzstan's Chui Oblast Court will review on December 20 the appeal by Sanjar Bakiev of the 10-year prison term he received last month, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
Sanjar Bakiev, a nephew of ousted President Kurmanbek Bakiev, pleaded guilty to involvement in unrest in the city of Jalal-Abad in May and was sentenced on November 2.
Supreme Court spokesman Baktybek Rysaliev told RFE/RL Bakiev wanted his sentence reduced.
At least two people were killed when supporters of the former president temporarily seized, then were forced out of the administration building in Jalal-Abad on May 13-14.
Sanjar Bakiev was charged with helping organize that operation and with illegal possession of weapons.
Former President Bakiev remains in Belarus, where he eventually fled after being ousted by a popular revolt in April.
