Nepal Prez calls special Parliament session from December 19

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

New Delhi, Dec 14, IRNA -- Nepal President has called a special session of Parliament from December 19.

Acting on a request from opposition Maoists, Nepalese President Ram Baran Yadav has called a special session of Parliament from December 19 in a bid to break the political deadlock over failure of lawmakers to elect a new Prime Minister despite 16 rounds of polls.

The decision to convene the session came after 187 MPs of main opposition UCPN-Maoist and eight smaller parties submitted a written request to the President to summon Parliament, which has failed to elect a new Premier even six months after incumbent Madhav Kumar Nepal's resignation.

So far, Parliament has held 16 rounds of elections for the post, for which Nepali Congress leader R C Poudyal is the sole candidate now.

'The candidature of Nepali Congress leader Poudyal has no relevance as the (previous) Parliament session meant for electing the Prime Minister came to an end and it failed to elect a new PM in 16 rounds of election. Therefore, a fresh process of electing the Prime Minister should begin,' pti reported quoting Maoist spokesman Dinanath Sharma as said in Kathmandu today.

'We have called the special session of Parliament to find a way out of the ongoing deadlock,' he said. 'We want the current stalemate to end through Parliamentary procedure.'

The special session was necessary to end the 'undemocratic' practices initiated by the caretaker government, he argued.

The 'Parliament session was also necessary to endorse the new budget presented by the government through ordinance,' Sharma said.

If the Parliamentary procedure fails to resolve the problem, then people will go for another revolt, he claimed.

However, Nepali Congress does not agree with the view as the party has already demanded that its candidate Poudyal be declared winner in the Prime Ministerial race since he is the sole candidate following withdrawal of candidature by Maoist chief Prachanda.

'Poudyal should be declared winner in the Prime Ministerial race as he has no rival in the election,' Nepali Congress General Secretary Prakash Man Singh said.

The Prime Ministerial election cannot end without giving any result, he said.
