NATO Commander visits Pakistan

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Dec 13,IRNA -- Gen. David H. Petraeus, Commander of the NATO International Security Assistance Force, visited Pakistan on Monday to meet with Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff, the U.S. embassy said.

They discussed various topics of mutual interest and ways to improve regional security, an embassy statement said.

This was Gen. Petraeus' fourth visit to Pakistan as the NATO ISAF Commander, although he has long-established relationships with General Kayani and the Pakistani military from his time as the U.S. Central Command commander, it said.

His last visit to Pakistan was November 2-3.

No more details were given in the statement and sources said the two generals discussed options how to increase cooperation against the al-Qaeda and Taliban.

Gen. Petraeus’ visit comes at a time when the U.S. secret documents released by WikiLeaks, has started a debate in Pakistan about the U.S. interference in Pakistan’s internal affairs.

Analysts believe that disclosure of the U.S. documents may have negative impact on bilateral relations, the notion rejected by Pakistan and the U.S. officials.
