Kyrgyz Leader To Task New Party On Coalition Talks

December 03, 2010

On December 4, Kyrgyz President Roza Otunbaeva will task another political party to form a coalition government -- a move that would mean the collapse of the coalition formed just three days ago.

The presidential press service announced on December 3 that the move followed a request by Almazbek Atambaev, the leader of the Social Democratic Party, one of the three parties that formed a coalition on November 30.

On December 2 Atambaev's coalition failed its first task when parliament rejected the only candidate nominated as speaker.

Kyrgyzstan held elections on October 10, which resulted in five parties winning seats in a new legislature designed to devolve power to the prime minister from the president.
