Over 120 UK war fatalities aged 21 or under

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

London, Dec 3, IRNA -- Nearly a quarter of British soldiers killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were aged 21 years old or younger, Armed Forces Minister Nick Harvey has revealed.

Out of 179 UK soldiers killed in Iraq, 37 were aged 21 or under.

In Afghanistan, the number is 86 out of 345 who have so far lost their lives.

In a written parliamentary reply published on Friday, Harvey said that a further 33 UK service personnel aged 21 or younger have suffered a traumatic or surgical amputation as a result of an injury sustained in Afghanistan between April 2006 and December last year.

Amputations range from the loss of part of a finger or toe up to the loss of entire limbs.

During the same period, the number was less than five.

Numbers prior to April 2006 have not been verified, while figures for 2010 will not be available until next year.
