DAHLGREN, Va. (NNS) -- The Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS) hosted Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) Naval Combat Systems School (NCSS) commanding officer Nov. 1 - 5 at several learning sites to see how American Sailors train.

"The objective of the visit was to familiarize Capt. Hyung Kyu Joo and his staff with the functions, infrastructure, and capabilities of U.S. Navy combat systems training methodologies, as well as address specific Korean Destroyer Experimental (KDX) -III Program - King Sejong the Great destroyer training program topics," said Darrell Tatro, director, Security Assistance and International Programs at CSCS. "This trip was specifically planned to facilitate a partnership between CSCS and the new NCSS command, which stood up 30 September."

Included in the visit were CSCS headquarters and the Aegis Training and Readiness Center (ATRC) in Dahlgren, Va., as well as training in Norfolk, Va., Dam Neck, Va. and Pearl Harbor.

While at CSCS and ATRC, Joo participated in a training round table discussion with Capt. Bob Kerno, CSCS' commanding officer, and Capt. Russ Haas, ATRC's commanding officer. Joo was briefed on CSCS International Programs training, Aegis Weapon System training for the KDX-III Program, and an overview of ATRC's program. The visit concluded with a tour of ATRC tactical equipment labs and demonstrations of electronic classroom capabilities and training tools.

"I was very proud and honored to host Capt. Joo," said Kerno. "As my counterpart in combat systems training, it is valuable for us to exchange practices and lessons learned as we move forward. I look forward to visiting Capt. Joo in the Republic of Korea in 2011."

While at CSCS Det. East, Norfolk, Va., Joo learned about the training conducted, the instructor qualification process, and schoolhouse infrastructure and training challenges. The tour included the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW)/Anti-Surface Warfare Tactical Air Controller lab, Single Ship ASW lab, Multi-Mission Team Trainer, and completed with the underway replenishment and seamanship facilities.

At CSCS Unit Dam Neck, Joo toured the Vertical Launching System and other training labs.

"This was not only an opportunity to further cement the collaboration between the U.S. and Republic of Korea navies, but also to expand cooperation and friendship," said Capt. Kenneth Krogman, commanding officer, CSCSU Dam Neck. "It was very evident from his visit that while our navies already share much, the potential for growth in the area of training is great."

Joo concluded his U.S. trip with a visit to CSCS Detachment Pearl Harbor.
