USS Memphis Commanding Officer Relieved of Duty

GROTON, Conn. (NNS) -- Commander, Submarine Development Squadron (DEVRON) 12 relieved the commanding officer of Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Memphis (SSN 691) Nov. 18.
Capt. William Merz, commander, Submarine DEVRON 12, relieved Cmdr. Charles Maher, commanding officer, Memphis, due to his loss of confidence in Maher's ability to command.
Memphis is homeported in Groton, Conn.
The relief comes as a result of an ongoing investigation of 10 Memphis crew members suspected of compromising ship's training examination keys. While there are no allegations that Maher was involved in the actual compromise, his leadership and performance fostered an environment that failed to uphold the high standards of integrity of the submarine force and the Navy.
Maher was relieved due to a loss of confidence that he would be able to improve the command's environment and execute the ship's mission. The ship was safe at all times and remains safe.
Maher has been reassigned to administrative duties at Commander, Submarine Group 2, homebased in Groton.
Memphis is now commanded by Capt. Carl Lahti, recently the deputy commander, Submarine DEVRON 12, also headquartered in Groton.
