Trial Opens Against Ousted Kyrgyz President
November 17, 2010
A court in Kyrgyzstan has begun hearing the trial of ousted president Kurbanbek Bakiev and 27 of his aides in connection with the deadly shooting of a crowd of protesters in April.
Eighty-seven people were killed and about 100 were injured during the violent unrest in Bishkek in April that ultimately led to Bakiev's ouster.
Prosecutors say Bakiev ordered troops to open fire on demonstrators protesting his policies. Bakiev and five other defendants, including his brother and eldest son, are being tried in absentia.
The hearing, which was open to the public, was held in a makeshift court in Bishkek's Palace of Sports under tight security.
Hundreds of victims and relatives repeatedly interrupted the court session with calls for retribution against Bakiev and his aides.
Defense lawyers are asking for 40 days postponement to better prepare for the trial.
