CHESAPEAKE, Va. (NNS) -- Riverine Squadron (RIVRON) 3 Sailors began a two-week long pre-deployment certification Oct 25., in the Top Rack Marina in Chesapeake, Va.

The certification included one week of a Unit Level Training Readiness Assessment (ULTRA) and a one-week Final Evaluation Problem (FEP). The Sailors utilized basic riverine skill sets, such as force protection operations, patrol and interdiction, visit, board, search and seizure, and small unit insertion and extraction.

Each Riverine squadron detachment must go through the ULTRA/FEP process prior to deployment.

"This training is important because it certifies each detachment to deploy," said Lt. j.g. David Cook, RIVRON 3 crew member. "At any point during the year one of the detachments will be in the training cycle."

Riverine Sailors also take this time to receive training on individual qualifications such as crew-served weapons, small arms, combat life saver and combat water survival training.

"If they successfully complete their training events during ULTRA, they are not required to repeat them during FEP," said Ray Davis, the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command riverine training administrator. "This allows the detachments to train on the wear areas during FEP."

Completion of the ULTRA/FEP process does not symbolize the completion of training. Riverines continually hone their skills to enable them to meet the objectives of the Maritime Strategy.

"The training does not end after certification," said Cook. "Each detachment must continue to train until we deploy, to maintain the skill sets and proficiency needed to be successful."

Riverine's primary missions are to conduct maritime security operations along rivers and other inland waterways, and to deny the use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack.
