GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba (NNS) -- Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, hosted High Speed Vessel (HSV) 2 Swift Nov. 8-9 and amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) Nov. 11.

Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, hosted High Speed Vessel (HSV) 2 Swift Nov. 8-9 and amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) Nov. 11.

The Fleet Industrial Supply Center Jacksonville-Guantanamo Bay detachment provided Swift and its crew with fresh food and vegetables, water, and 67,063 gallons of diesel fuel.

Iwo Jima received more than 800,000 gallons of fuel and stores, and NAVSTA Guantanamo Bay facilitated liberty calls for Iwo Jima Sailors and Marines.

"We also have capabilities to do personnel transfers and offer ships a venue to perform maintenance on their vessel," said Cmdr. James Thornton, GTMO operations officer.

GTMO also provides ships with the ability to perform ship wash-downs before entering the U.S. or another country's port, said Thornton.

"We help keep readiness levels of the fleet high any time a ship is operating over our horizon," said Thornton.

Swift, home-ported in Norfolk, Va., is providing humanitarian aid and supplies to several ports in the South American region as part of Southern Partnership Station 2011.

Before arriving in Guantanamo, Swift delivered relief supplies and aid to Haiti, including water filtration systems and a donated school bus.
