Iran deplores continued presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Nov 13, IRNA -- Iran on Sunday deplored continued presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan.

Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili said that foreign forces follow their own interests rather than those of Afghans.

Speaking to Afghan Foreign Minister Zelmi Rasul, Jalili said national unity in Afghanistan is the key to restoration of lasting security.

He said Afghan people have shown throughout history that they defend their dignity and independence with might.

He added that to guarantee welfare and security of Afghans, tractors should be sent to the country not tanks.

He said foreign forces should not sacrifice Afghan people's interests for their own political objectives.

Multiple growth of poppy cultivation in Afghanistan testifies inability of foreign forces to do what they claim, Jalili said.

Rasul for his part called on Iran to have more leading role in restoration of security and stability in Afghanistan and launch deeper cooperation with its neighbor.
