IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Srinagar, India, Nov 12, IRNA -- A militant and a constable of Special Operations Group (SOG) of police were killed in a gunbattle in Sopore town in north Kashmir on Friday.

According to reports received here, gunbattle erupted after a large number of troops from SOG and Centarl reserve police Force and the Indian army cordoned off Naseem Bagh locality in Sopore early on Friday.

These reports said a group of militants trapped inside a residential quarter resisted bid by troops to storm the house sparking a gunbattle.

In the initial round of cross fire one SOG personal was killed early in the morning and later one militant was also killed in the gunfight, police said late afternoon in Srinagar adding the gun battle was on.

There has been a sudden spurt in militant activities following a government crackdown on anti-India protesters contained the wave of mass demonstrations that have paralysed Kashmir for past five months.

Meanwhile, yet another teenaged boy, who was battling for life after being hit by a tear smoke shell during protests last year, succumbed to injuries on Friday, officials said.

14-year-old Mohammad Aarif Bhat died early on Friday morning at his residence and was laid to rest at martyrs graveyard in the old city.

Aarif was hit by a tear smoke shell fired by police to quell protests at Maisuma in city centre October last year. He had later slipped into coma at the hospital.
