PHILADELPHIA (NNS) -- Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) expanded its ship design capability Nov. 3 by opening a new modeling and simulation center at Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division - Ship Systems Engineering Station (NAVSSES) in Philadelphia, Pa.

The center features collaborative software, allowing design specialists to work projects simultaneously from a central location, both improving communication and allowing greater interaction between team members.

At the same time, the system saves thousands of dollars in software licensing fees through group licensing agreements, contributing to a reduction in the design cost of ships and systems.

"The new modeling and simulation center will enhance our support to Navy shipbuilding programs in building an affordable future fleet," said Dr. Kimberly Drake, NAVSSES's Machinery Research and Silencing Division modeling simulation committee member.

"We designed the new facility with a total ownership cost-approach," said Drake. "Instead of purchasing 10 licenses of the software for 10 employees' computers who only use it 10 percent of the time, we can buy one or two networkable licenses for 10 employees to use 100 percent of the time."

Current projects underway at the center include work on the design of the ship-to-shore connector and landing craft air cushion (replacement) shipbuilding programs and energy consumption research.

NAVSSES provides the Navy's primary technical expertise and facilities for both naval machinery research and development and naval machinery life cycle engineering. These two technical focus areas are effectively linked under a common organizational structure, the Machinery Research and Engineering Department.
