2 Indian paramilitary men shot dead in Kashmir

Srinagar, India, Nov 10, IRNA -- Suspected Kashmiri militants shot dead two Indian paramilitary personnel, guarding a key highway, in a busy market in North Kashmir’s Baramulla District Wednesday afternoon.
Militants equipped with pistols shot dead at point blank two members of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in crowded Pattan market situated on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway, 30 kms north of capital Srinagar, police sources said.
This is the first major strike against the Indian forces after they crushed a mass uprising against Indian rule that erupted after series of civilian killings by paramilitary forces earlier this year.
Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Muslim-majority Kashmir and 112 unarmed protesters have been killed, almost all by police and CRPF, since mid June this year.
Pattan township has been worst hit during the current unrest and has lost half a dozen persons to forces’ bullets. Most of the township has remained under army siege for almost five months with villagers complaining of contestant harassment by the security forces.
A police officer said the killed CRPF personnel belonging to the 154 Battalion were on patrolling duty at the main bazar of the township, when unidentified youth armed with silencer fitted pistols shot at them from point blank range.
Assailants also snatched the service rifles of both the soldiers, he said.
No militant outfit has, however, claimed responsibility for the attack.
One of the CRPF personnel, Constable B Teja, died on the spot, while Head Constable Om Prakash succumbed to his injuries at hospital.
Large contingents of paramilitary forces arrived on the scene and cordoned off the whole area to arrest the militants, who had melted in the crowds after carrying out the attack, eyewitnesses said.
