Iran says negotiations with Taliban will not help Afghanistan
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Berlin, Nov 10, IRNA -- Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for European Affairs Ali Ahani said on Wednesday that talks with Taliban would not resolve the Afghan conflict.
'Can negotiations with extremists be a solution? Our experience says: no. Extremists will neither bring peace nor stability,' the Berlin-based daily junge welt cited Ahani as saying in an exclusive interview with the Italian newspaper il manifesto.
'They are not content with what is being offered but they want total control,' he said.
Ahani warned the increased military presence of the US and its allies would 'not solve the problems but complicate them.'
He called for a 'realistic approach' on resolving the Afghan conflict.
The Iranian diplomat said the timetable for a withdrawal of foreign troops and the creation of working groups with Afghanistan's neighbors could be an 'important step' towards pacifying the war-stricken country.
He highlighted the need for promoting the 'Afghanization' process which includes the strenghtening of institutions as well as investing in reconstruction and boosting economic development.
Ahani made clear Tehran was pursuing 'an official and transparent cooperation' with the Karzai government aimed at promoting the rebuilding process in Afghanistan.
He added Iran had also been in contact with our Afghan groups in its bid to help restore peace in that country.
