Guineans Await Presidential Runoff Results

VOA News
08 November 2010

Guineans are anxiously awaiting the results of Sunday's presidential runoff election.

Guinean leaders and the two candidates have called on people to remain calm while the country's electoral commission counts the votes. Provisional results are not expected until Wednesday.

Former prime minister Cellou Dalein Diallo is favored to defeat longtime opposition figure Alpha Conde after winning the first round with 44 percent of the vote.

Sunday's voting passed off peacefully, but many Guineans are concerned about violence once a winner is named.

The campaign was marred by ethnic tension that helped spark election-related street fighting. Diallo is a member of the Fulani, Guinea's largest ethnic group, while Conde comes from the smaller Malinke community.

The presidential election is designed to return Guinea to civilian rule after decades of dictatorship and a two-year military junta.

In remarks broadcast by Guinean state television late Sunday, acting Prime Minister Jean-Marie Dore called on Guineans to accept the election results.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
