BRUSSELS, Belgium (NNS) -- The Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) (SS/SW) Rick D. West spent two days touring facilities and meeting service members at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) as well as the NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, Oct. 27-28.

During his visit to the area, West had a chance to interact with both U.S. and international service members in a one-on-one environment, talking about the future of joint-military operations and the important role personnel play while working in an environment like NATO.

"You guys are ambassadors not only to Belgium, but also to our international military partners here at NATO," said West while talking Sailors at SHAPE. "What you do is important and you have the opportunity to create long-term relationship with your international military co-workers."

West's trip to Brussels was the last leg of a 10-day tour to various installations throughout the European theater. During the trip, West visited commands in Naples, Italy; Souda Bay, Crete; Sigonella, Sicily; and Brussels.

"This is the first time I have had the chance to visit any of these locations," said West. "It gave me the opportunity to see what our Sailors are doing in this part of the world and also what other military members are doing at places like NATO. There are some great Sailors here in Europe and there is a great opportunity to experience different cultures while serving overseas. Take advantage of it. Sailors should be getting out to these locations and seeing what the Navy has to offer."

West acknowledged that though there are some challenges with living and working in a foreign country, "the opportunities these locations present far outweigh any challenges Sailors may run into."
