Some 200 Killed In North Caucasus Terror Attacks In 2009
October 28, 2010
MOSCOW -- Russian Deputy Prosecutor-General Ivan Sydoruk says the number of extremist crimes committed in Russia's North Caucasus has grown fourfold this year compared to 2009.
Sydoruk said at a session of the Committee for Legal and Court Issues of the Federation Council -- the upper house of parliament -- that thus far this year 205 people have been killed in 13 terrorist attacks in the North Caucasus Federal District.
Sydoruk pointed out that terrorist attacks have been carried out in areas of the region where such attacks were previously very rare.
He said some 400 insurgents have been killed since the beginning of the year and more than 50 terrorist attacks prevented.
The North Caucasian Federal District is made up of seven republics and one krai and has a population of some 9 million people. It was created in January when it split from the Southern Federal District. Russia has eight federal districts.
