USS ENTERPRISE, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Enterprise (CVN 65) Carrier Strike Group (CSG) completed its Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) Oct. 26, successfully meeting the training goals for the three-week exercise.

COMPTUEX typically represents the first time a carrier strike group operates together as a cohesive team and is a critical step toward final certification to deploy overseas.

Evaluators from Commander, Strike Force Training Atlantic certified Enterprise CSG and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1 as qualified for open ocean operations.

COMPTUEX builds on the strike group's combat readiness by simulating sailing in a restricted area with high tensions existing between fictional countries loosely based on real world geo-political conditions.

"This is my third COMPTUEX aboard Enterprise, and it encompassed by far the most challenging scenarios I've experienced," said Capt. O. P. Honors, USS Enterprise commanding officer.

During the scenario-based training, the strike group team encountered threats including small boat attacks, mines, strait transits through hostile waters, aircraft and submarine threats, as well as internal drills aboard each of the six ships that comprise Enterprise CSG.

COMPTUEX is one of the final steps that the Big E and Enterprise Strike Group have in preparation for the upcoming 21st deployment of the Navy's oldest carrier.

"I am extremely proud of how the Sailors and Marines of the Enterprise and Carrier Air Wing 1 team performed during the exercise," said Honors. "We have proven that we can defend the ship and have demonstrated our teamwork with other ships in the strike group."

With these scenarios successfully completed, the ship looks towards the final evaluation ahead, its Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX). Upon completion of JTFEX, ENTSG will be ready for its first deployment since 2007.

Enterprise CSG consists of Enterprise, the guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55), the guided-missile destroyers USS Bulkeley (DDG 84), USS Barry (DDG 52) and USS Mason (DDG 87), USNS Arctic (T-AOE 8), Carrier Air Wing 1 and Destroyer Squadron 2.
