SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Commander, Naval Air Forces addressed members of the San Diego Military Advisory Council (SDMAC) during its monthly breakfast held at the Admiral Kidd Club in Point Loma Oct. 20

Vice Adm. Allen G. Myers spoke about San Diego Fleet Week, the Navy's recent 235th birthday, and the centennial of naval aviation during his keynote speech.

Myers said that San Diego Fleet Week is not just a series of events, but a genuine outreach and support from the community to thank the service members in uniform.

"I had the opportunity to co-host [Coronado Speed Fest] this year and it was such a thrilling event. The expressions on the faces of the Sailors, and especially the veterans, were priceless," Myers said. "I am grateful for what this community does for our men and women in uniform, and I would like to extend a debt of gratitude to them."

Myers also talked about the Navy's 235th birthday that was celebrated last week.

"Our Continental Congress built the Navy in 1775 to do two things: influence a foreign power and influence our sea lanes of commerce. That is what the Navy has been doing for 235 years," Myers said.

In conclusion, Myers discussed the celebration of the centennial of naval aviation.

"Naval aviation has been around for a hundred years and is a very important part of our Navy. Naval aviation takes the area of influence for every ship and extends that area," Myers said. "Back in the day, the area was restricted to a line of sight from a crow's nest, and now it can be extended out past 1,000 miles. So naval aviation is a huge part of our Navy's success."

Following his speech, Myers answered questions from the audience.
