SAN ANTONIO (NNS) -- The Navy Medicine Information Systems Support Activity (NAVMISSA) held a ribbon cutting ceremony Oct. 21, officially marking NAVMISSA's relocation from the San Antonio Garcia Federal Building to its permanent location in the San Antonio Bank of America (BOA) Plaza.
The ceremony occurred two years to the day that NAVMISSA officially celebrated its arrival in San Antonio from Bethesda, Md.
"Today's ribbon cutting marks the completion of the Navy Surgeon General's 2007 Concept of Operations (CONOPs) moving NAVMISSA from Bethesda, Md., to San Antonio," said Rear Adm. Eleanor Valentin, Navy Medicine Support Command (NMSC) commander.
"On behalf of the surgeon general and all in Navy medicine, I thank the men and women of NAVMISSA," said Valentin. "I have no doubt that you will make the future of NAVMISSA. I have no doubt that you will fulfill your destiny, that is to be the premier leader in medical information systems program management, and in providing high quality, innovative technologies that enhance healthcare for the war fighter and our beneficiaries."
NAVMISSA's 2008 move to San Antonio and its final move to the BOA Plaza collocated the activity with its Department of Defense (DoD) counterparts. The DoD counterpart, the Military Health Service Cyberinfrastructure Services office, previously called TIMPO (Tri-Service Infrastructure Management Program Office), is collocated in the BOA Plaza.
NAVMISSA's Army and Air Force counterparts, the US Army Medical Information Technology Center (USAMITC) and the Air Force Medical Operations Agency (AFMOA), are also located in San Antonio.
"This type of joint collaboration offers synergy and fosters improved communications among the services," said Capt. Tina Ortiz, NAVMISSA commanding officer. "I see this move as another step to further improve NAVMISSA's efforts and the efforts of our DoD and sister service counterparts to effectively accomplish the MHS IM/IT (Information Management/Information Technology) mission."
Ortiz said the new leased location is 20,000 square feet and currently offers NAVMISSA's 24 military, 48 civilian, and 28 contractor staff advantages beyond synergy and improved communications. These include adjacent staff parking, workspaces located on one floor, and a professional environment, conditions that were not available at the Garcia building.
NAVMISSA initially requested facility space from the local military installations in San Antonio, but many were fully occupied, and it was not a Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) directed move.
"The Garcia Federal Building was the only option available in the area, and GSA (U.S. General Services Administration) leased the facility to this command under the condition that should funding become available for facility improvement/renovations, NAVMISSA would need to relocate," Ortiz said. "Subsequently, federal stimulus funding was approved for the Federal Building, causing the NAVMISSA move to the Bank of America (BoA) Plaza."
NAVMISSA was reorganized Sept. 1, 2008, from the Naval Medical Information Management Center (NMIMC) in Bethesda, Md. For more information on NAVMISSA visit: http://www.med.navy.mil/sites/navmissa/Pages/NAVMISSAHome.aspx
