London, Oct 20, IRNA -- Another British soldier has been killed in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has announced Wednesday.
The latest death, the third in Nahr-e Saraj district so far this month, occurred from an explosion while clearing bombs as part of the Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Task Force. The other two were also the result of explosions.
A total of 341 British troops have died in Afghanistan since the overthrow of the Taliban regime in 2001. The latest death is the 96th so far this year and compares with 108 UK soldiers who were killed in 2009, more than double the 51 killed during 2008.
Prior to British troops being deployed in Helmand in 2006, only five lost their lives in the first five years of the war, including just two killed in action and three from other causes.
