USS SHOUP, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Shoup (DDG 86) Sailors volunteered their time at two orphanages near Kuala Lumpur during a port call visit in Port Klang, Malaysia Oct. 8-12.
The 27 Sailors visited Rumah Ozanam Boys House and Juara Boys & Girls Home, where they spent the afternoon helping with the upkeep of the houses and grounds of the facility and played games with the children.
They also provided educational, humanitarian and goodwill items to the children from Project Handclasp, a public-private venture that transports such materials around the world with the help of U.S. Navy ships.
"The chance to lend a hand to those less fortunate than us was a humbling experience," said Fire Controlman 3rd Class Abraham Hamilton, originally from Asheville, N.C. "I look forward to our next opportunity to contribute."
The volunteers said they felt they received as much benefit as they provided to the children.
"It was a great day," said Chief Hospital Corpsman Stephanie Minix, from Graham, Wash. "We not only helped a community in need, but the lives that were touched on both sides will be forever changed in a positive way."
Shoup is currently on a routine deployment to the 7th and 5th Fleet areas of responsibility with the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group.
